The New Wheel
March 28th, 2013If this picture doesn’t make you happy, you might be dead. I kid! But seriously, look at that dress and sari! The stripes! The pom poms! The crazy bright colors! The marigolds! Her smile! Don’t you just want to get to know her more? I know I do.

July 7th, 2011When I opened my San Francisco Chronicle, I knew immediately I needed to contact photographer Thor Swift for more pictures from the wedding of Alex Zapharis and Gary Fisher, the “godfather of mountain bikes.” Instead of one picture I thought I’d share two. I love the bike procession and pedicab, too. What I love most about bicycling is how slowly you can drink everything in. The trees. The sound of breathing. The kiddie lemonade stand. Combine bicycling and a wedding–prime time for when all you want to do is drink everything in before it dissolves into the evening–and you’ve got one pretty memorable affair. See a video too.

March 17th, 2011Love love love this wedding so so SO much. It’s just right up my style alley. See the awesome details (like custom-printed water bottles for guests to take home as favors!) here. Oh, and Happy St. Patrick’s Day! I’ll be making some Irish soda bread and perhaps some Guinnes stout cupcakes. My hubby Derek is doing the full nine–potatoes, cabbage and corned beef! Can’t wait…

September 9th, 2010I love the sheer joy on the groom’s face. And the blue bike! It belongs to the couple, Julie and Nathan, who used it for their engagement shoot by awesome San Francisco-based Gertrude and Mabel Photography. Check out more wonderfulness from this wedding here. More to share next Thursday!

May 27th, 2010From this wedding at the Faculty Club in Berkeley, Calif. Photo by Bay Area photographer Kate Harrison. Check out her blog too, where I saw this Wayne Thiebaud-inspired cake display. Such brilliance! Wayne Thiebaud is one of my faves, especially since he paints cakes and sweets like the dickens.
One of my favorite things about Kate is her devotion to green weddings. She started Bee Green last fall to encourage sustainability practices for her clients. Rad, right?
Which brings me to a Lily Spruce tip: when selecting photographers, ask them how they’re a green business. Do they bike to client meetings? Take public transportation? Shoot digital and send digital after shooting events to save paper? Do they have most of their info on their Web site or PDF documents they can send you, like their rate sheets? All good questions to ask if you really want to have others walk the walk with you on wedding day…
